Why format and reinstall everything when you could just do a repair and reinstal a few drivers?
So to do a repair you need to boot off the XP CD and install IDE/RAID drivers if needed when prompted

Once all the drivers are loaded you will arrive at this screen

You will notice a repair feature here but this is not the one we are looking for, this repair will take you to the recovery console which will allow you to replace files, fix boot problems, enable/disable services, etc... To get to the repair we want you need to hit Enter to select to set up Windows XP. Next you will be greeted with the License Agreement.

Press F8 to agree and Setup will now search for previous installations of Windows

After a few seconds the following screen will show up

and this is the repair that we are looking for, so press R to get the repair started. when the repair is done and you are back in Windows check Device Manager as you may have to reinstall some drivers.
